How to calculate percentage from marks or CGPA
Forms often ask for percentage even when a marksheet shows CGPA or grade points. The right calculation depends on the board, university or employer instruction. Use the formula they provide whenever it is available.
Open CGPA calculatorMarks percentage formula
For marks, the usual formula is: marks obtained divided by total marks multiplied by 100. For example, 426 out of 500 is 85.2 percent. Always use the total maximum marks printed on the marksheet or required by the form.
CGPA conversion
Some institutions use CGPA multiplied by 9.5, but this is not universal. Others use a different multiplier or provide a conversion certificate. If a recruitment form mentions a specific method, use that method instead of a general calculator.
Entry checklist
- Keep the same decimal precision requested by the form.
- Do not round up unless the instructions allow rounding.
- Check whether the form wants percentage, percentile or grade.
- Save proof of the conversion method when applying for jobs or admissions.
Example calculations
If you scored 426 marks out of 500, the percentage is 426 divided by 500 multiplied by 100, which equals 85.2 percent. If your CGPA is 8.2 and your institution uses a 9.5 multiplier, the converted percentage is 77.9 percent.
Why official formulas matter
A small rounding difference can matter when a form has eligibility cut-offs. If your marksheet, university website or recruitment notice gives a formula, use that formula and keep a copy of the instruction for your records.
